About Us

Established in 1896, Volunteers of America of Kentucky is one of the region’s oldest, largest, and most diverse human service organizations. Today, we offer 32 distinct social service programs in Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Southern Indiana. Our services include shelter for families experiencing homeless; residential substance abuse treatment; housing for seniors with low-incomes, people with mental illness, and women with disabilities; eviction prevention; employment-focused programs for veterans; care coordination for people with HIV/AIDS; HIV/AIDS prevention, education, and testing; and neighborhood-based homes for people with developmental disabilities.

Each program, regardless of its focus, labors under the shared agency mission to “create positive change in the lives of individuals and communities through a ministry of service.” Last year, Volunteers of America of Kentucky served more than 8,000 people.

Volunteers of America of Kentucky is a local affiliate of Volunteers of America, Inc. based in Alexandria, Virginia. Under a national charter, it provides services designed locally to address specific community needs.

Volunteers of America of Kentucky is governed by a voluntary 20-member Board of Directors, President & CEO Jane W. Burks, and six vice-presidents. We employ a staff of more than 750 and engage approximately 500 volunteers each year.

Working in partnership with local faith congregations, government agencies, businesses, individuals, and other nonprofit organizations — and supported by thousands of individual donors and volunteers  — we seek to meet many of the most pressing social needs in the communities we serve.

Programs are funded through a diverse array of funding streams, including federal, state, and local grants and contracts; private foundations; and public contributions. This affiliate provides professional, evidence-based services with compassion and common sense. In Fiscal Year 2010, nearly 88 cents of every dollar was spent on direct services.
